Making Room for the Life You Want

March 23, 2017

Spring is the season we associate with tilling the soil for new growth, both figuratively and literally. For most of us, it means taking time to clear and clean our homes and offices to allow for change: more breathing space, less stress, renewal, and a well-deserved and anticipated refresh.

The roadblock that most of us encounter, however, is the actual DOING of the decluttering, organizing, tossing, donating, and repurposing. If you need more inspiration than “how to” instruction, you may want to watch a fantastic, one-hour documentary on Netflix called "Minimalism".

It looks at living an intentional life without the encumbrances put upon us by consumerism, society, and other people's expectations/standards/benchmarks. It covers everything from travelling the world as a nomad with the only 52 items you own, to how a family of four has reorganized and reset their home and lives. If you get a chance to watch it, it's a game changer.

The guys who are the focus of the documentary have a website, and in one of their blogs (http://www.theminimalists.com/game/) they propose a minimalist game. You can play on your own or with friends/family to get a jump-start on the annual Spring Cleaning ritual. It’s a great way to take action, get momentum, and stay challenged to create or regain the spaces and the lifestyle we each want for ourselves.

Even though I have been purging and minimizing for some time, I'm playing this game with a couple of my friends this month so that I can get rid of even more stuff that I know I don't need, don't want, or doesn't serve me in the life I want.

Let me know if you decide to play, and/or your thoughts on the documentary. I’d love to hear from you!

(If you want any hints or tips to ease the pain of tossing or donating items, particularly when there’s an emotional attachment, I’ve got some great ones...)
